HOW TO CHANGE AN OIL FILTER
Keeping the vehicle at peak performance requires basic maintenance. Changing your oil filter is one of those routine jobs that pays great rewards.
Your car’s oil filter removes dirt and contaminants from the engine oil, preventing particles from reaching the vehicle’s engine to prevent damage to it. Don’t wait for the oil light to come on; staying on a routine maintenance schedule will keep your vehicle running smoothly for years.
Your vehicle manual will recommend how often to change the oil filter. Your driving habits have an impact on when you should change your oil filter. If you take a lot of short trips or drive around town, you may need to change your oil filter more often than someone who drives mostly on freeways.
Step by step instructions

Start by preparing your car. Park your car on a level surface and set the parking brake. Place a block between the tires and the ground to ensure that the vehicle does not move. Be aware that engine oil can reach high temperatures, so allow enough time for the engine oil to cool.Â

Next, it’s time to open the hood and find the oil filter. Look at the sides and rear of the engine. You should look for a round object, the size of a soup can, sticking out of the bottom of the motor.
Now that you have found the oil filter, you must decide how to reach it. You may be able to reach it from the top, but on some vehicles the only way to reach it is from below. If you don’t have enough clearance, you will need a ramp to lift the vehicle.
Step three
It is time to remove the old oil filter. Place a container under where you will remove it. If you want to keep your hands clean, wear latex gloves. Clean the filter with a cloth; this will prevent it from becoming slippery. Unscrew the filter with an oil filter wrench. As you unscrew the filter, be sure not to let the oil spill. Put the old filter in a plastic bag and tie it up. Set it aside for recycling.
Step four
Now it is time to install the new oil filter. At one end of the filter, there is a large hole: take a liter of oil and pour oil until it is three-quarters of the way full. Around the hole is a rubber O-ring; Smear oil on the ring with your finger.
Place the new oil filter in the same place where you removed the old filter. Gently tighten by hand until it is positioned correctly and then turn it an additional quarter or half turn. That’s it! You have successfully changed the oil filter.
